Langland Bay Breakdown
The Setup: A south-facing, sheltered bay that acts as a magnet for swells traveling up the Bristol Channel. Thanks to the protective headlands, it can remain clean during Westerly and North-Westerly winds which heavily blow out nearby exposed beaches like Llangennith.
Tide Dependencies: Best surfed on an incoming tide from low to mid. As the tide reaches high, waves hit deep water and bounce off the sea wall causing significant backwash, rendering the surf unpredictable and messy.
Local Hazards: Crab Island—a shallow reef on the eastern side that produces a heavy, hollow right-hander. It is strictly for advanced surfers. Additionally, strong rip currents frequently form alongside the rocks on both edges of the bay, especially during large swells.
